My name is Jonathan Weeks, I grew up on the Connecticut River in Haddam. Never hunted until about 5 years ago when I started to teach myself. My passion for bird hunting is strong, and I dont drop a ton of birds but love it.
Made it to the DEEP waterfowl meeting for the first time this year and was a bit turned off by the back and forth, this and that about bird limits and where this bird is from and that ect. This wasn't my idea but one of the DEEP Officers made the statement that there should be some form of tagging on the birds. It didn't seem well taken but an idea popped into my head which is the making of this voluntary forum. Its the easiest way for a tracking system. Its not costing the state anything and will only work with input from the hunters.
The more info the better. Its voluntary. I have made (and am working to catchup on and finish the forums) by date, zone, season, county, ect. If there is any input at all please let me know. This is all out of my head and I am figuring that you dont need to say your exact spot ect. but if you honestly report the type of bird, which area your in (its generalized), and your bird taken info, that we can build a decent database of information.
Now this information should be helpful to the biologist in many ways. It should show what species are being taken, at what date, in what areas. This includes bands as well. The information should generally show population statistics (based off how many birds biologist count and what are taken), and migratory patterns. If a decent amount of hunter input their hunt info, and a certain species are taken in one or two counties heavier than others, it would or should show that possibly the birds are more densely populated. Or on the other hand, if earlier dates show a higher number of geese being taken in northern counties, then by date that number falls and rises towards southern counties, it should 'by theory' dictate that the flocks are migrating, and maybe by going back and looking at weather patterns, it all should coincide with one another.
None the less, I am not a biologist or scientist. I solely am putting in my time with this to help with the sport. Maybe I am totally wrong with it all, but as far as I can see some form of tracking and surveyed information should help in some way. Once the seasons are closed I will take all the info and put it into a spread sheet or graph it somehow.
I really think if we all 'band' (a little bit of duck humor there!) together, we can get some really good information out of this. It shouldnt take anyone a long time, log on, and click your info in, then add some extra in a reply if you wish. I will be updating the early season as well so that everyone can add in previous information. If anyone would like to be a moderator and help me with some of the task of making the polls for each day it would really be a great help. I am trying to get this done as quickly as possible and maybe theres an easier way but for now this is what I have come up with.
I appreciate your time, input, and helping out with this. Always feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
